Ideju da se 20. jul posveti ovom sportu predlo\u017eio je UNES\u041aO i kao takav se proslavlja od 1966. godine nakon \u0161to ga je ustanovila Svetska \u0161ahovska federacija.<\/p>\n<p>Veliki broj ljudi na celoj planeti igra \u0161ah, amaterski ili profesionalno, a Me\u0111unarodni dan \u0161aha je lep povod da se ova magi\u010dna strate\u0161ka igra promovi\u0161e i popularizuje. Neka istra\u017eivanja i ankete pokazuju da je oko 70% odrasle populacije u odre\u0111enom trenutku igralo \u0161ah tokom \u017eivota.<\/p>\n<p>Prvo Svetsko prvenstvo ove igre sa figurama na crno belim poljima odr\u017eano je 1886. godine, a od 1924. godine odr\u017eava se i \u0160ahovska olimpijada.<\/p>\n<p>Prete\u010da modernog \u0161aha je drevna indijska igra Chaturanga, koja je, prema istori\u010darima i arheolozima, po\u010dela da se igra u 5. veku.
