Kao devojka bavila se slikarstvom i pevanjem. Postala je poznata nakon \u0161to su je \u010dlanovi grupe Big Brother and the Holding Company pozvali da im se pridru\u017ei. S njima je nastupila na Monterey Pop festivalu 1967. godine, a dve godine kasnije bila je me\u0111u najve\u0107im atrakcijama Woodstock festivala. Proslavile su je pesme \u2018Piece of My Heart\u2019, \u2018Cry Baby\u2019, \u2018Mercedes Benz\u2019 i \u2018Me and Bobby McGee\u2019.
